- Try Something New
Part of being a leader is staying open-minded. You cannot possibly know everything, and as technology and educational resources grow, your team members will attain knowledge faster than ever. Listen to their ideas, hobbies and interests. They might have an innovative way to do something smarter, not harder. This builds efficiency and trust within your organization for now and in the future.
- Use the Skills in Other Segments of Your Organization
Whether you’re talking to the Chief Engineer or the receptionist, they probably possess individual skills that can be utilized in other segments of your establishment. Corporate capabilities aren’t limited to a person’s job description, so it is important to reassign job titles, promote people as necessary, and capitalize on your current staff. It is better to fix a problem internally if you can, rather than hire an outsider to conform to your business model.
- Support Different or New LOBs
With the realization of new KSAs, you might even consider starting another line of business (LOB). This takes added time and what we call – process organization, but if an idea or skillset has potential, it could be lucrative. Make sure to analyze the LOB from a process perspective and keep track of resources if you decide to go this route. Talk to members about how and why they have extra skills and abilities so that you may understand their motivation and expansive knowledge on a newfound talent or hobby. If their eyes light up with excitement at the chance to discuss their expertise, you can be sure that they will be determined to do a good job on new goals you set for them.
