If you work in a business, chances are you negotiate every day. Some may negotiate million dollar deals with customers, while others may face the challenge of negotiating within their own organization. Luckily, negotiating is a skill that gets better the more you do it. So, the next time you find yourself in a negotiation, try following the advice.
Don’t Say Yes Automatically
When negotiating, keep in mind that many people make an offer that is much lower than what you’re wanting. Think the offer over thoroughly and don’t just settle for what they are giving you. If it doesn’t meet your needs, try making a counteroffer.
Don’t Negotiate With Yourself
Don’t get too antsy during the negotiation process that you begin second-guessing and negotiating with yourself before the other party has had time to answer you. Give them time to answer before you come back with a lower offer.
Don’t Be Afraid To Say No
If you are not satisfied with what your employer is offering you, don’t be afraid to say no! This is the most powerful word that can be used during any negotiation.
Try To Find A Win-Win Outcome
The outcome should be a win for you, a win for your employer and a win for the business. Try to ensure that each party comes out of the negotiation with a win and the outcome is evenly balanced. This will help show you are trying to help build the business, not destroy it.
Ignore The Feeling Of Intimidation
Keep in mind that your employer needs you, just as much, if not more than you need them. Don’t be intimidated when speaking with them.
Negotiate With The Decision Maker
It will do you no good to spark a negotiation with someone in your company who doesn’t have the authority to make a decision. Try to speak with someone who is in a position to make a decision and say yes.
